ECPTA seeking partner for hosting international golfing event

JANUARY 29, 2015

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has issued a call for expressions of interest in partnering it in hosting a golfing event in the Eastern Cape in the 2014/15 financial year.

The ECPTA sponsors the Africa Open, a fully-co-sanctioned event on the European Tour that is held in Buffalo City.

The Agency states that as part of its mandate “to advance the development of the tourism industry, as a major contributor to the economy of the Eastern Cape,” it has identified the hosting of sporting events “as a key part of its strategy”.

It adds that the hosting of key sporting events is seen as “a catalyst for facilitating the development of local tourism products.

Further, it is seen as a means to market the Eastern Cape as a destination and increasing visitor numbers to and within the province.

“It is further felt that by hosting events of this nature, the ECPTA will also be able to create opportunities for job creation and local economic development within the province, while at the same time creating awareness about the Eastern Cape as a tourist destination.

The ECPTA says the international golf event must aim to attract “the significant market that is the tourists and media who follow the international golfing circuit”.

It adds that the event has to feature high-profile, internationally recognised professional golfers.

ECPTA says that it also wants the event to be covered and broadcast internationally by the recognised sports and news channels.

Expressions of interests have to be sub-mitted by February 16.

In terms of the 2015 European Tour International Schedule, the Africa Open will be played between March 5 and 8 at the East London Golf Club and will be preceded by the Johannesburg Open and followed by the Tshwane Open.

It will be the sixth year that the prestigious Africa Open has been played in East London. -
