Educational campaign for Eastern Cape Use of Official Languages Bill underway

A publicity campaign to create awareness of the Eastern Cape Use of Official Languages Bill is currently underway in the province.

Representatives of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, assisted by Oversight Section and Legal Unit officials, are currently conducting a publicity campaign to educate the public about the Eastern Cape Use of Official Languages Bill.

According to the Eastern Cape provincial government, this will ensure that stakeholders understand the gist of the bill and are able to comment. The Committee will hold public hearings from 7 March 2016 to 11 March 2016. 

The objectives of this bill include:

  • To provide for the regulation and monitoring of the use of official languages for government purposes in the Eastern Cape Province;
  • To provide for the establishment and functions of the Provincial Language Unit;
  • To provide for the establishment of language units by provincial departments, provincial public entities and provincial government business enterprises; and
  • To require provincial departments, provincial public entities and provincial government  business enterprises to adopt a language policy.
