EFF questions Zuma’s Parliament accountability claims

BY CHARL BOSCH - JANUARY 20, 2015

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have described President Jacob Zuma’s claims that he never refused answering questions in Parliament as “an opportunistic, disgusting and distasteful lie spread by what is supposed to the highest office in the land”.

This comes after Zuma told the SABC in a statement on Tuesday morning that he went to Parliament but that “members stopped me from answering questions. I’m still waiting for the day I'm told this day has come I've always gone to Parliament.”

“According to the Rules of Parliament, the President was supposed to appear three times for Question sessions in Parliament, and he only came to Parliament once on the 21st of August where the Speaker of Parliament disrupted the proceedings after the President failed to answer the question of when is he going to pay back the money as directed by the remedial actions of the Public Protector,” EFF Acting National Spokesperson, Fana Mokoena, said in a statement on the party’s website.

Listing a line-up of facts the party believes Zuma failed to adhere to during 2014, Mokoena said that their research has proved that the president only attended the August 21st sitting before being interrupted halfway after National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete, “had called the police to remove EFF Members of Parliament.

“What these facts illustrate is that Parliament intends to continue with the distasteful sub-culture of not holding the President accountable,” he said, adding that the party would have no choice but to ask question during Zuma’s State of the Nation address on February 12th as “we have written and re-written to the Speaker of the National Assembly to call a sitting of Parliament prior to the 12th of February 2015 to allow the interrupted Question Session to the President to continue.

The party’s application for the sitting was denied last week with Mbete citing intimidation as the main reason.
