EFF supporters turn on their own MP

FEBRUARY 13, 2015

While the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) managed to disrupt President Jacob Zuma’s 2015 State of the Nation Address (SONA) – as promised, they did so as a divided party. This is after a scuffle broke out between EFF supporters loyal to EFF leader Julius Malema and party MP Andile Mngxitama at a Cape Town hotel.

Mngxitama is reportedly among a group of EFF members who have fallen out of favour with Malema. He was about to address the media at a press briefing that he had called when a rowdy group of the EFF supporters interrupted him and forced him to remove his EFF T-Shirt before he was whisked away to safety.

Malema’s lieutenant and EFF deputy president, Floyd Shivambu, subsequently congratulated EFF members who attacked Mngxitama.

Shivambu tweeted: “The Fighters who saved the EFF T-shirt from a rebel (rebellion) should be congratulated. We should defend the Movement. No retreat!!”

That same group also went to the Mngxitama's alternative venue and only disperesd after the hotel called the police.

Mngxitama and some other EFF MPs said they would not attend the SONA saying they feared for their safety.
