DECEMBER 8, 2015

Another charge of escaping from lawful custody could be added to eight awaiting trial prisoners, who escaped from the Mthatha High Court after overpowering their SAPS guard and stealing a police van on Monday afternoon.

According to Eastern Cape police, the suspects were about to be transported back to the Mthatha prison when the incident occured. Police, at this point, could not say exactly how the prisoners overpowered their guard and got hold of the keys to the police vehicle.

However, local police gave chase up to a cul-de-sac close to the Mthatha sports ground where the prisoners abandonded their damaged getaway vehicle and tried to make for it on foot.

Their luck ran out as officers managed to arrest five of the escapees.

Police were still searching for the other three at the time of publishing.
