Eight-year-old boy’s body recovered in Buffalo River in Mdantsane


East London police divers on Wednesday recovered the body of eight-year-old boy, Sinothando Mevana, who drowned in the Buffalo River, in Mdantsane, outside East London, on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, the deceased followed his 11-year-old brother, who was going on a fishing trip with a friend, also a minor at about 17:00 on the day.

“It is alleged that the deceased slipped on a rock and fell into the river and drowned,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi.

He added that the K9 Unit was called to the scene, but abandoned the search due to darkness and resumed again on Wednesday morning.

An inquest docket is under investigation at Inyibiba police station.
