The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced 57 year-old Mlindeli Giba  to 15 years behind bars for raping 10 year-old girl, in May 2015, at Skiet Informal Settlement, Butterworth.

According to Butterworth police, the convicted called the victim to his house and raped her on the 8th of May 2015, at about 18:30.

It is alleged that the victim reported the matter to a neighbour, who then phoned the victim’s father, who was at work at the time.

“The convicted promised to give the victim’s father a sum of R2 000 every month if he doesn’t report the case to police, but the father refused,” said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

The 57 year-old was later caught by the community and was handed over to the police, who charged him with rape.

The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), who eventually secure a conviction and the sentence.
