Uitenhage police arrested two suspects, aged between 24 and 33 years-old, on Sunday after they allegedly overpowered a 61-year-old woman at her residence in Kirkwood that same evening.

It is alleged that the victim was playing with her dogs outside her home on Sunday evening and as she stepped back into her home, three suspects overpowered her and demanded cash.

According to the police, the suspects took cash, cell phones and electronic equipment and forced her into her white VW Golf and drove off in the direction of Addo.

“The suspects ordered the victim to withdraw cash in Addo and they drove off to Port Elizabeth and whilst the suspects were at a shopping complex in Port Elizabeth, police officers from KwaDwesi noticed how they acted suspiciously,” said police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

She added that, police went to investigate. That is when the suspects sped off in their vehicle and a high speed chase ensued in the direction of Uitenhage.

Back up was requested from all the stations and units in the Uitenhage Cluster and during the chase shots were fired between the suspects and police.

However, police officers managed to force the vehicle off the road along the R365 – old Cuyler Manor Road, and two of the suspects were arrested by the Uitenhage and PE K9 members.

A third suspect managed to escape, but the search for him is still ongoing.

No one was injured during the shootout.

“Members freed the victim, who was taken to a local hospital in Uitenhage and the police also recovered the VW Golf, cash and the stolen equipment,” said Captain Swart.

The two suspects are due to appear in the Kirkwood Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing  charges ranging from house robbery, abduction, attempted murder, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and the illegal possession of ammunition.
