EP Kings Team announced ahead of Currie Cup opener
A newly-looked Eastern Province Kings side was named on Wednesday for their Currie Cup opener against the Boland Kavaliers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday evening (kick-off at 17:00).
Newly-appointed captain, Schalk Ferreira, and reserve hooker, Martin Bezuidenhout, are the only two players that have remained since the Southern Kings’ last Super Rugby encounter against the Stormers almost a month ago.
The Eastern Cape franchise has been under much pressure in assembling a Currie Cup make-up squad after the union was liquidated just last week. After much constraint, various stakeholders formed an agreement to form a side with the same management that aided the Southern Kings during the Super Rugby campaign for the first half of this year.
Most of the players have been contracted on a short-term basis for the Currie Cup season due to the brief recruitment period that was made available.
Last year, the EP Kings ended seventh (second-last) on the overall Currie Cup log, winning just two out of 10 matches. This year’s campaign will now be the third successive year of the King’s participation in the Premier Division Currie Cup.
Regarded as one of the six franchise unions in SA Rugby, this heeds much pressure on EP to expectantly out-perform the club unions in the Premier Division, namely: Pumas, Griquas and Boland Kavaliers.
