EP Kings vs. Sharks 2016 Currie Cup preview, statistics

The Eastern Province Kings are scheduled to play the Sharks in Growthpoint Kings Park, Durban on Saturday in the Sharks’ seventh match and the Kings’ sixth match of the 2016 Premier Division Currie Cup season so far.

The Sharks are currently placed second on the Currie Cup log with 20 log points, having won four out of their six games to date. In contrast, the Kings are currently placed last with just a single log point, having lost all five of their encounters so far.

Since the Kings entered the Premier Division Currie Cup in 2014 for the first time in decades, they have played the Sharks three times – having lost all three. In 2014, the two sides met in Durban and the Sharks stomped their authority with a 53-24 win over the Port Elizabeth-based side.

In the 2015 Currie Cup campaign, the Kings showed to be more competitive against their Kwazulu-Natal opponents, as they went down 33-25 in Durban and just 24-20 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth.

So far this season, the Sharks have scored 203 points in their six matches (33.83 points per match), while conceding a total of 145 points (24.17 points per match). They have scored a total 23 tries (3.83 tries per game), while having conceded 19 tries (3.17 tries per game).

The Kings have scored a total of 100 points (20 points per match) and have conceded a total of 217 points (43.4 points per match) in their five matches to date. Their total try-scoring tally stands at just 12 (2.4 tries per game), with a total of 33 tries scored against them so far (6.6 tries per game).

The Sharks have played four matches at Growthpoint Kings Park this season so far, having won three of them with the solitude 38-30 loss coming at the hands of the Cheetahs just last week.

Having home ground advantage and leading the various statistics for the 2016 campaign so far, the Sharks will be strong favourites for this match-up on Saturday, however no result can be set in stone, with the Kings still seeking their first victory of the season.
