Escape into the countryside: A romantic adventure at Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm

A mere hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth is Addo Dung Beetle Guest Farm, a 4-Star establishment that was built on a hilltop with a magnificent view of the Zuurberg Mountains and the Addo region’s famous citrus orchards.

Arriving at the guest farm, we were greeted by our hosts Rod and Magna, who made sure all our needs and requirements were met. We had booked one of their five luxury chalets for a romantic getaway. Addo Dung Beetle also has three rustic bush cabins with self-catering facilities.

The luxury chalets, all with panoramic views of the Zuurberg Mountains, offer two twin beds or a queen-size bed, TV, air-conditioning, a mini bar fridge, hairdryer, microwave, coffee and tea making facilities, a safe and hangers. They also have en-suite bathrooms including an outside shower!

For relaxation, there is a splash pool, a bar and dining lapa with an upper-level lounge/breakfast section and sundowner deck. Please note dinners need to be booked prior to arrival at additional costs. During your stay, you can also try hiking, mountain biking, game viewing, bird watching and citrus tours - Addo Dung Beetle is after all situated on a working citrus farm.

The less energetic can still unwind at the guest farms massage room (treatments to be booked in advance), gym, Jacuzzi or rock pool, - which is what we did. We made our way down to the Jacuzzi which lay amidst a rock pool. Here, we enjoyed the surrounding scenery of natural landscapes and just let the tranquillity hypnotise us.

As the sun was starting to head beyond the mountains, Rod kindly reminded us of our afternoon game drive. Honestly, there is no better way to end off a day of relaxation than to go on a 4 hour guided game drive through Addo Elephant National Park.

I found Rod extremely knowledgeable about the veld. He held our interest the entire time with tales of life in the countryside. The game drive also afforded us many photo opportunities as we encountered various species of wildlife. To cap it off, we also came across the flightless Addo dung beetle, which is found almost exclusively in the Addo area.

Whether you are looking for a luxurious holiday or fun-filled adventure, you are sure to have a memorable stay in that beautiful part of the country.
