Eskom misleading public with proposed tariff adjustment application - DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused Eskom of playing a rear guard action following the utility’s reported lodging of an application to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), for a tariff hike adjustment worth R22.8-billion.

In a statement on Thursday, Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said the application forms part of a Regulatory Clearing Account implemented during the 2013 / 2014 financial year, adding it would first be reviewed before a decision is made.

“Eskom and government must realise that the South African people are not piggy bank to be abused,” DA Shadow Minister of Energy Gordon McKay said.

“The need to recover additional funds from the consumer to cover costs incurred to prevent load shedding is dubious and completely misleading. We call on NERSA not to approve any further tariff increases until Eskom can prove its requests for additional funds are legitimate”.
