Ex-BCM mayor guilty of fraud and theft

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape has welcomed a ruling by the East London Magistrate's Court to find beleaguered former Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor, Zukisa Faku, guilty of fraud and theft.

In passing her verdict on Tuesday, Judge Sadia Jacobs found that Faku abused her official municipal credit card while on business trips in 2009, by purchasing goods worth just under R15 000 for private use, despite knowing she was not authorised to do so.

Speaking in a statement, DA Shadow Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Kevin Mileham said the verdict was only the tip of the iceberg as wide-scale corruption and financial mismanagement remains a feature of the Metro.

“[During] the 2013 / 2014 financial year, [the] Buffalo City Metro lost a total of R600.9 million to unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful (UIFW) expenditure,” Mileham said.

“Corruption at all levels of government hurts citizens as it diverts money required for service delivery into the pockets of selfish officials. The guilty verdict against Faku should serve as warning to all public officials that corruption will not be tolerated”.
