Extensive search yields no proof of Stutterheim crash

NOVEMBER 16, 2015

No proof has been found of a reported light aircraft crashing in the mountains between Stutterheim and Cathcart on Sunday, firefighters and medics have confirmed.

Eastern Cape health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo told News24 that a helicopter was dispatched earlier following apparent eyewitness reports of a plane crash.

“When our team got there, there was a fire and a lot of smoke, but no trace of an aircraft was found,” he said.

Pieter Rossouw, manager of the Greater Stutterheim Fire Protection Association, said its members were part of an extensive search through the hills.

“Emergency medical services and police were also part of the operation. But besides the fire, no trace of a plane crash was found,” he said.

The authorities have called off the search and the fire has been extinguished, Rossouw said.
