FIT FOR A KING: Royal treatment at Grande Vista Guesthouse
Every time I travel to East London, I try to experience a new accommodation establishment for at least one night of my stay. This is usually a hit-and-miss affair, but on my recent trip, I found one of the Border region’s best kept secrets – the Grande Vista Guesthouse!
After a busy day of meetings, I headed out of East London towards Gonubie and found Grande Vista nestled amongst lots of mature palm trees and a beautiful garden just off the main road. As the rust-finished gate opened, I could feel the opulence of this exotic Tuscan-style boutique hotel as it stood before me.
I was warmly welcomed by Marine Roos, the owner and Manager of Grande Vista, before ushering me to my room and inviting me to make myself at home. Immediately, I became aware of the stately home feel, finishes and attention to detail.
My room, although not the biggest available, had the feel of a presidential suite. A large comfy-couch looked out of the first floor window over the pool and towards the most amazing views of the Gonubie River as well as the African landscape - rolling hills and farmlands, beyond. A king-size bed, draped with a luxurious blanket, and a large dark-wood desk neatly complemented the other dark-wood furniture in the room.
Ideal for long-stay guests, it also had a unique mini-dressing room which contained a large amount of shelf and hanging space and a generous bathroom complete with twin basins, full-size bath and a large, double-headed shower. Standard amenities included DSTV access and an air-conditioner.
After enjoying the Gonubie view, and twilight slipping into darkness, I made use of the desk and caught up on my emails and plans for the next day before turning in for a peaceful night’s sleep.
With a full and busy day ahead, Marine’s early-bird, ‘master chef-styled’ breakfast of bacon, poached eggs, savoury mushroom medley, flat toast, jam and juice had me ready – but, not before I watched the sun rising on the horizon, and transforming the scenery, from the lodge’s veranda as I enjoyed my coffee.
Grande Vista is an impressive establishment; with a presidential and a honeymoon suite, double-room and two smaller double-rooms - all stylish, well-equipped and comfortable, to accommodate travelling corporate executives and romantic couples. With a peaceful country setting and magnificent views, I highly recommend you pay them a visit on your next trip!
