Five denied bail for gruesome murder in Grahamstown

Five people accused of the gruesome murder of 29 year-old Thembelani Qwakanisa appeared before the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a bail application, which was denied and they remanded in custody to allow for further investigations.

Qwakanisa’s body was retrieved wrapped in a carpet at a dam in Extension 6, in Joza Township, Grahamstown, by police divers on the 5th of October.

According to the police, they received information of alleged drowning at the dam and they quickly responded. Police divers managed to recover Qwakanisa's body.

“A case of murder was opened and after intense investigation detectives arrested five suspects, aged between 22 and 29 years-old, at Joza Township,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

The five suspects have been identified as Thembelani Onceya (28), Akhona Onceya (28), Simamkele Onceya (22), Siviwe Gqotholo (29) and Degree Mzwanele Mali (25).

However, Gqotholo was referred for psychiatric evaluation.

The five suspects will appear before the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on the 24th of October.
