Five Grahamstown men due in court for gruesome murder


Five suspects are expected to appear before the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, in connection with the gruesome murder of 29 year-old Thembelani Qwakanisa.

Qwakanisa’s body was retrieved wrapped in a carpet at a dam in Extension 6, in Joza Township, Grahamstown by police divers on the 5th of October.

According to the police, they received information of alleged drowning at the dam and they quickly responded. Police divers managed to recover the body of a male.

“A case of murder was opened and after intense investigation detectives arrested four suspects aged between 22 and 28 years-old on Sunday at Joza Township,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

The four suspects appeared in Grahamstown Magistrate Court on Tuesday and were remanded in custody.

However, a fifth suspect, aged 28 years-old, handed himself over to Grahamstown police on Monday afternoon.

The 28 year-old made a brief appearance in the Grahamstown Magistrate Court on Wednesday, and he was also remanded in custody.

The five suspects will appear on Monday for their formal bail application in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court.
