Floating whale carcass found in Jeffreys Bay

OCTOBER 27, 2016

A whale carcass is to be towed out to sea from a beach in Jeffreys Bay after initial reports mistook it for a beaching or struggling whale.

"At 10h05, Wednesday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) St Francis Bay duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to investigate eye-witness reports of a whale suspected to be beaching or in difficulties off-shore of Jeffreys Bay," said Sara Smith, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander.

"We launched the Sea Rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II and on arrival on the scene confirmed that a whale carcass was floating off-shore.

"To prevent the carcass from washing ashore TNPA have arranged a boat that will tow the whale carcass out to sea."
