Former Eastern Cape Premier Balindlela wants the SAHRC to intervene in Qunu water woes

MARCH 16, 2015

Former Eastern Cape Premier, Nosimo Balindlela, who now serves as the Democratic Alliance's Shadow Minister of Water and Sanitation, says there are unresolved water issues plaguing villagers in Qunu – where former President Nelson Mandela was born, and she plans to approach the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) over the issue.

After 20 years of democracy, many people in the village Qunu still do not have access to clean tap water.

“We must not lie to people. There is a big, big issue on water,” Balindlela was quoted on Eyewitness News.

“This has been going on for a long time and doesn't help to duck and dive. People can no longer take that.”

Balindlela has called on government to assist by sending engineers to villages like Qunu in order to come with long-term solutions to challenges faced by villagers.
