Former Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela back in Bhisho in DA colours

NOVEMBER 22, 2016

On Monday, Nosimo Balindlela and Jane Cowley were sworn in as Democratic Alliance (DA) Members of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature by the Speaker, Noxolo Kiviet, in Bhisho.

"Nosimo Balindlela is no stranger to the Provincial Legislature as she has served as Premier and MEC before. Jane Cowley was the Leader of the DA Ndlambe Council Caucus," described Bobby Stevenson, DA Eastern Cape Leader in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.

"She is also an experienced educationalist who served as the principal of a farm school for 12 years and taught at township schools. She has a Master’s degree in Education."

Stevenson also said that both of them will add tremendous value to the DA team in the legislature as well as to the province as a whole.

"They will add firepower to the DA's efforts to become part of government in 2019 and bring about change in this province."

Nosimo Balindlela will serve on the portfolio committees of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and Office of the Premier. She was the Premier of the Eastern Cape from April 2004 until August 2008, who she apparently bowed to pressure from the the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress, of which she was a member, that she resigns.

She later resigned from the ANC altogether in November 2008 to join the Congress of the People (COPE). In November 2012, she jumped from the troubled party and joined the DA. She became a DA member of parliament in May 2014.

Jane Cowley will serve on the portfolio committees of Education, Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism as well as Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

The vacancies occurred as a result of Athol Trollip being elected as Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay and Ross Purdon moving to the National Assembly.
