Four bodies identified after helicopter crashed near Port St Johns


The wreckage of a Robinsons R44 four-seater helicopter that crashed on Wednesday afternoon in Port St Johns area was recovered on Thursday while the bodies of four people, who were killed in the crash, were also identified.

The helicopter was travelling from Margate, on the south coast of KwaZulu Natal, when it crashed down a cliff on the Msikaba River, near Lusikisiki, at around 15:00 on Wednesday.

“We received the information about the crash late yesterday afternoon, we encountered difficulties in reaching the area but police rescue team managed to recover the helicopter today [Thursday] and identified  four bodies,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mduduzi Godlwana.

According to the police, those killed in the crash were between the ages of 24 and 50 years old.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
