Four on the run after weekend attack on elderly Grahamstown couple

Grahamstown police have launched an investigation regarding the whereabouts of four suspects who reportedly attacked an elderly couple on their farm in Salem over the weekend.

Speaking in a statement, police spokesperson Captain Milanda Coetzer, said 70-year old John Kinnel and his 71-year old wife, Madeleine, were severely assaulted when the men entered their house on Friday evening, demanding the handing over of firearms.

Coetzer said that Madeleine had been strangled and gagged while her husband was beaten over the head with a blunt objected and then stabbed, with the suspect also threatening to slit his throat if she didn’t show them where they kept the firearms, which they don’t have.

The men eventually fled with the couple’s Nissan Hardbody bakkie and electrical equipment stolen from the property. A case of attempted murder, house robbery, assault and theft of a motor vehicle has been opened.
