Four to appear in court for murder of Helenvale man

Four suspects accused of shooting dead a 23-year old man from Helenvale over the weekend, are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court later today on a charge of murder.

In a statement, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the body of Renaldo Africa was found in an alley in Van Duuren Street at 09h25 on Saturday with multiple gunshot wounds. The exact motive however remains unknown.

Naidu said police officers carrying out duties under Operation Lockdown were tipped off about a gold Volkswagen Golf speeding away from the scene, and subsequently gave chase when the vehicle was spotted in Highveld Road not long after.

A high speed chase ensued with the Golf crashing into a private vehicle as the suspect tried to escape, only for their route to be blocked by police at Rabie Street in Korsten. The suspects, aged 22, 23, 24 and 25 were immediately apprehended and taken into custody with police also confiscating a.38 revolver and the Golf, which was found to have been reported stolen in Cradock in August 2014.

A further charge for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition was opened against the 22-year old, while the 23-year old faced a further charge of murder and the 25-year old for murder and reckless or negligent driving.
