Four men, aged between 33 and 47 years old, are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Friday after they were busted by the Hawks and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Bloemfontein in an intelligence-driven operation on Tuesday night before they could commit a farm attack.

"In a planned tactical approach, police moved in on a farm in Jagersfontein, where the four armed suspects were hiding in the storeroom, waiting for it to become dark to attack and rob the farmer and his family," said police spokesperson, Constable Peter Kareli.

"The suspects were arrested with a loaded pistol with its serial number filed off, in the storeroom which is about 250 meters from the main house.

"Police also seized four balaclavas, four pairs of gloves, a butcher knife, a panga and a rope that were found in possession of the suspects.  The suspects, who are from the Botshabelo area, will be charged with conspiracy to commit house robbery and the possession of firearm and ammunition.

The Free State Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabethe Mpembe commended the members for their swift action and professional conduct.

“We will continue in our efforts in delivering on our core policing mandate by protecting the lives and property of our citizens,” added Lieutenant General Thabethe Mpembe.
