Free State mobile clinics for motorists a success – MEC

JANUARY 15, 2016

Setting up mobile clinics for Free State motorists will now become a monthly routine, MEC for health, Benny Malakoane, said on Thursday.

Malakoane said the Arrive Healthy campaign which they started in December had helped reduce the number of road fatalities.

“We want to help motorists be aware of their own state of health. We don’t want people to actually suffer in silence, while we can give them medical checks on the go,” he told News24.

During the festive season, motorists were tested for high blood pressure, alcohol levels, cholesterol, sugar levels and hypertension – and were also given useful health safety tips.

He said in one incident, a motorist had been found to have high blood pressure which could have resulted in a stroke, but he was given medical attention.

Now they will not only focus on national roads but would also visit taxi ranks to offer medical attention to drivers and their passengers, he said adding that doctors would be on standby should motorists require any medical attention.
