Free State pastor murdered at fake roadblock

MARCH 2, 2016

A Free State pastor who died after he was shot twice by a group of armed men at a fake roadblock was their pillar of strength, his family said on Tuesday.

Motlalepule Leseba, 52, was shot at Odendaalsrus road on Saturday evening. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but died on Monday evening.

According to family spokesperson Godfrey Leseba, the reverend was with a family friend and not his son as previously reported.

Speaking to News24 on Tuesday, Godfrey said the incident happened when the pastor and the friend were on their way to a church conference in Odendaalsrus.

"The whole community was shocked when they heard of the shooting. He was a prominent leader and we will miss him dearly," Godfrey said.

"He was always willing to help a lot of people and he just managed to stretch out his hand to people who needed him. The family is still trying to come to terms with the loss, but we have received a lot of strength from the church."

Leseba leaves behind a wife and two children.

Godfrey said the pastor's wife was still struggling to cope, while the family friend who witnessed the shooting was undergoing counselling.

Police spokesperson Malebo Makhosana said the men shot the cleric twice and fled with two cellphones.

"It is alleged that Leseba and his [companion] were stopped in Odendaalsrus road by what looked to them like a police roadblock," Makhosana said.

A case of murder has been opened. No arrests have been made.
