Free State woman busted with 50kg of gold ore and over R1 million in cash

The Hawks in the Free State, in conjunction with Head Office Serious Organised Crime Unit and Crime Intelligence, on Tuesday afternoon arrested a 32 year-old woman after she was found in possession of gold bearing material and more than one million Rand cash in Welkom.

"Information was received that there was large sum of money as well as gold bearing material at a house in Diaas Street 4 Dagbreek," described police spokesperson, Captain S'fiso Nyakane.

"When officers arrived at the house they found a woman and upon executing the search warrant, a 50kg of gold bearing material, gold processing equipment’s as well as R1 082,400 in cash were found in the house."

The cash was hidden inside an old geyser next to the house. A vehicle, a Toyota D4D Fortuner, and the cash were subsequently seized.

"Investigation continues and more arrests are eminent."

The suspect will appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 15 June 2016, facing charge of acquisition, possession, disposal of unwrought precious metal.
