Free WiFi access for NMMU students to learning sites

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students are reminded that they can access the university’s online learning portal for free from any of our seventeen public facilities equipped with wifi access.

Launched in April 2016, the e-connect wifi project, enables students to do research for assignments or even online tests from certain municipal libraries and customer care centres.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Corporate Services, Cllr Dean Biddulph, said this innovate service could be considered as an interim measure while the #FeesMustFall impasse is being resolved and even after campuses reopen.  

“As part of the city's Memorandum of Understanding with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, any student who needs to access the NMMU online learning portal is able to do so via the metro's wifi infrastructure.

“All NMMU students who do not have access to internet at home would be able to login into the university's learning sites to do their research and online tests at no cost at Metro Libraries and Customer Care Centres.

“In addition, we confirmed with the ICT staff of NMMU that all students who do have internet access at home would also be able to login into their learning sites from home,” said Cllr Biddulph.

The municipal facilities where free wifi services are available are Korsten Customer Care Centre, Mfanasekhaya Gqobose Banking Hall, New Brighton Customer Care Centre, Uitenhage Customer Care Centre, Walmer Customer Care Centre, Algoa Park Library, Korsten Library, Motherwell Library, New Brighton Library, Newton Park Library, North End Library, Uitenhage Library, Walmer Library, Zwide Library, Korsten Driver’s License Testing Centre and the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre.

Global Trends show that municipalities and cities have embraced implementing local broadband network infrastructures as the key to uplifting and boosting their economies, providing improved services and service delivery to their communities and stakeholders, and most importantly, to bridge the digital divide.
