A G4S security guard was shot and injured during cash-in-transit heist on Thursday morning, at about 07:50, at a shopping complex along Commercial Road in Sidwell, Port Elizabeth.

According to the police, the incident happened when two guards exited a chain store at a local shopping complex when they were confronted by four armed men.

“Shots were fired in the foyer and one of the guards was wounded,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Naidu.

However, she added, the suspects managed to escape in a white Toyota Hilux bakkie through a back alley way with an undisclosed amount of cash. Two firearms were stolen from the guards - a 9mm pistol and a LM5 rifle.

However, a civilian, who witnessed what had happened, also fired at the fleeing robbers.

The injured guard was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The festive season is upon us and businesses and chain stores are urged to be extra vigilant with cash handled on the premises,” said Colonel Naidu.

She added that, it is advised to change the routine and vary times when depositing cash in the banks or through armed transit security.

Colonel Naidu further advised stores to employ extra security during opening, closing and peak hours of business.

“Always treat people with suspicion and immediately report unusual behaviour of individuals in the vicinity and never open the store if there is an inkling of suspicion,” she said.
