Gates tops rich list for 16th time
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has once again been named as the world’s richest man with his net worth standing at $79.2-blillion (R928.3-billion). According to the latest figures by Forbes magazine, Gates’ fortune grew by an estimated $3.2-billion (R37.5-bllion), which sees him topping the rich list for the 16th time over the last 21 years.
The latest figures also shows an increase in the number of billionaires with the addition of 290 newcomers pushing the total up to 1 826 for a combined amount of $7.05-trillion (R826.6-trillion), a jump from last year’s $6.4-trillion (R750.2-trillion).
Among the new entrants were former basketball star turned owner and shoe tycoon, Michael Jordan at 1 741st and with $1-billion (R117.2-billion), as well as SnapChat creators Even Spiegel (24) and Bobby Murphy (25), who are also the youngest on the list with a fortune of $1.5-billion (R175.8-billion) each.
Rated 67th, with a fortune of $14.7-billion (R172.3-billion), Nigerian cement and sugar tycoon, Aliko Dangote, keeps his position as Africa’s richest person with the best placed South African being the Rupert family at 179th with a combined net worth of $7.4-billion (R86.7-billion).
