George mayor accused of assaulting wife

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has reportedly submitted a letter of explanation to George mayor Charles Stander, following reports that he assaulted his wife earlier this week.

According to reports, a charge was made against Standers by his wife on Monday evening. Although unconfirmed, it has been alleged that the couple got into an argument over a set of car keys, which resulted in Standers assaulting her.

Local media reports that Standers could face expulsion from all party activities if found guilty, but that he would be allowed to continue as mayor.

In an interview with the SABC, ANC Western Cape spokesperson Yonela Diko said Standers must be dismissed with immediate effect.

“No man has a right to raise his hand to woman for any reason and we hope that the DA takes this seriously and should have no tolerance for violence against women,” she said.
