George mayor suspended for assaulting wife

BY CHARL BOSCH - FEBRUARY 5, 2016

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has confirmed the suspension of George Executive Mayor Charles Standers from the party, after it was reported that he allegedly assaulted his wife on Monday evening.

Local media reports that Standers, who requested a week’s leave on Wednesday, received a letter from the party’s Federal Executive Council on Thursday, informing him of his suspension. It is alleged that he got into an argument with his wife over a set of car keys.

“After taking into consideration his submission, the decision was taken to suspend him from the party and party activities pending the outcome of the investigation and the disciplinary hearing,” DA Regional Chairman of the Eden, Karoo and Overberg Districts, Jaco Londt, told the George Herald.

The paper also alleged that Standers would likely remain in office as suspending him would result in the party losing its one-seat majority over the African National Congress (ANC).
