A Port Elizabeth man has been shot dead after trying to assist a robbery victim on Friday afternoon. The incident happened along the city's Commercial Road.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Alwin Labans, told local radio station, Algoa FM, that the robbery victim had left a pawn shop with a bag of jewellery when he was accosted by two men.

The men then grabbed the victim's bag from him and fled while the victim gave chase.

Labans said a member of the public who witnessed the incident also gave chase in his vehicle.

That was when the fleeing robbers fired shots at the vehicle, fatally wounding the driver.

The robbery victim was not unharmed.
