Grade 9 Grahamstown student breaks 14-year Biathlon record

Toni Rafferty, a Grade 9 pupil at The Diocesan School for Girls, in Grahamstown, had an excellent Biathlon on Saturday in Oudtshoorn, in the Western Cape. She participated in the WP Biathlon Tweekamp.

According to Cherié Wille, Communications Officer at the school, "She set a new South Afican record, which was last broken 14 years ago, in 2002, for the U15 Girls. She was also award the Victrix Ludorum for the event."

Toni ran the 1000m run in 3:02:65 and swam the 100m swim in 1:01:44 for a total of 2473 points. The prvious record was 2467 points.

"She also set a new Championship record, the old record was 2434 set in 2007. It was the only record set on the day in very hot conditions, plus 40 Degrees," described Wille. 

"Toni now heads to Port Elizabeth on Thursday for the EP Champs and then to Bloemfontein for the SA Champs on the 26 March."
