Grahamstown police investigating suspected arson attack at Rhodes University

MAY 12, 2016

The Grahamstown police Forensic Unit is currently investigating a suspected attempted arson attack at Rhodes University on Thursday morning.

According to a circular from the office of Rhodes University Vice Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela; "At approximately 6:45 this morning [Thursday], two fires were started on the floor at the south entrance to the council chamber in the main administration building, using an inflammable substance.

"The incident occurred shortly after the building was unlocked for the day by a member of the Campus Protection Unit. The smell of the fire was quickly noticed by a CPU guard, and members of the Campus Protection Unit extinguished it before significant damage was done."

The news comes after normalcy was returning to the institution following the violent confrontations witnessed between local police and students during the RUReferenceList protests in April.

The University said it condemnes all forms of violence, arson and destruction of property.
