Grahamstown's DSG holds annual Careers Day

MARCH 4, 2016

The annual DSG Careers Day took place on Wednesday afternoon.

"This event, which is sponsored by the Port Elizabeth branch of PricewaterhouseCoopers, has been in existence since 2008. The DSG Careers Day was founded and developed by former HOD of Life Orientation, Anne Preston. It has grown in popularity and numbers, of both pupils and presenters," described Cherié Wille, Communications Officer at the school.

"This year, the Careers Day was attended by almost 60 different presenters. These included representatives from the various faculties at Rhodes University, as well as different professions such as Occupational Therapy, Medicine, Law, Psychology, Sport Science, Physiotherapy, and Engineering, to name a few.

"There were a variety of  'gap year' opportunities too. Pupils also had the opportunity to receive Career Counselling from the Rhodes Career Centre. Representatives from Universities such as NMMU, UCT and University of Pretoria were also on hand to advise students about applications."

Wille said that there were also opportunities for pupils to find out about studying overseas, and options available in this regard.

"Grade 11 and 12 pupils from all schools in Grahamstown were invited to attend this event.  Presentations were 25 minutes long and pupils were encouraged to plan and strategise to attend the presentations most relevant to their interests," she said.

"All in all, it was a successful event with many pupils feeling excited and motivated to find out more about opportunities to which they were introduced."
