Heavy falls expected today: Weather office

SEPTEMBER 1, 2015

Garth Sampson, SA Weather Services Spokesman for the Eastern Cape, on Tuesday morning said isolated heavy falls are to be expected between Plettenberg Bay and Port Alfred - but should be over by tonight.

"A cut off low with a ridging high is causing an influx of moisture, that has already producing some heavy falls in places. Plettenberg Bay has already received 78 mm up until 8am this morning," he said in a statement.

"Generally scattered showers can be expected south of Darlington Dam for the rest of today.

"Isolated heavy falls, of 50mm and more, can be expected along the coastal belt and adjacent interior between Plettenberg Bay and Port Alfred."

Sampsonn warned that the rains could lead to localized flooding in places.

"The heavy falls should be over by tonight, but light rain is still expected on Wednesday.

"It will clear gradually from the west on Thursday," he said.

"The good news is that the weekend will be CLEAR."

"The last 15 years (2000 to 2015) were checked for the period January to August."

Total rainfall January to August

Highest on record 2012 with 745 mm.

2015 was 488 mm which is the 7th highest in the last 15 years.

Number of RAIN DAYS

Number of days with 0.1 mm and more.

The highest on record (last 15 Years) was 2011 and 2015 with 81 days.

Number of days with 1.0 mm and more.

The highest on record (last 15 Years) was 2015 with 60 days.

Previous was 58 days in 2014.

Number of days with 5.0 mm and more.

The highest on record(last 15 Years)   was 2015 with 30 days.

"So by all intense and purposes, although 2015 is thus far not the wettest year, it has had the most rain interrupted days in the last 15 years," Sampson said.

"Thus, consider this when complaining to your local grass cutting service or builder."
