Heavy police presence in Walmer amid reports protests might resume

There is a heavy police presence in the Walmer Township area amid reports that the violent protests that were witnessed last week might resume on Wednesday morning.

Reports that circulated on social media on Tuesday night claimed that the police had patrolled the area in the night after several negotiations with residents had deadlocked. Drivers have been warned to take precaution.

"After hours and hours of negotiations, we unfortunately have to warn the public that negotiations have failed and protest action will resume early tomorrow morning in the Walmer area again," a community Facebook page, Walmer Neighbourhood Watch Port Elizabeth, warned residents.

"The following roads are will be a danger zone for you, travel at own risk along these roads.

  • Buffelsfontein rd from Sasol at Greenshileds Park robots to 
  • 8th ave Heugh rd Walmer
  • Villiers rd between 10th ave and 8th ave. 
  • Victoria drive
  • Community rd along trail line

"These are most likely the first affected areas with regards to stone throwing, tires burning and rocks/debri in the roads that could lead to serious injury and or destruction of your car."
