Hildesheim Guest House: absolute serenity at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains

SEPTEMBER 23, 2014

You won’t need to worry about Big Foot in this lush, indigenous forest, but you will certainly experience as much awe when you see the famous ‘Big Tree’ of Woodville. Standing at 31m, it is 9m wide and is said to be more than 850 years old. But, then again everything is just as breath-taking in the Wilderness region with its fair weather, scenic mountains, natural forests, wildlife, rivers, lagoons and white sandy beaches.

It is among these sights, in the peaceful village of Hoekwil, that I discovered the ideal place to stay for anyone wanting to escape the bustle of urban living. Hildesheim Guest House, situated only 5km from the Wilderness’ beaches, offering spacious and tastefully decorated Bed and Breakfast rooms and Self Catering Cottages.

Arriving at Hildesheim, I was warmly received by the owner, Tony, who ensured that my stay was memorable.

Depending on your needs, you can choose between Hildesheim’s self-catering Garden Cottages, their Bed and Breakfast suites, the Family Suite which is adjacent to a pool and can sleep four people and also the Honeymoon Suite. All have views of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains.

Accommodation is offered in the main house too which has a farmhouse atmosphere and spacious rooms. It is in its dining room that I enjoyed a classic farmhouse breakfast of fresh juice, filter coffee, homemade jams, yogurt, crisp toast, cereal and bacon and eggs the following morning.

I stayed in one of the Garden Suites and found it very comfortable.  The room comes with a coffee station and on entering I found a glass of sherry awaiting me along with the breakfast menu for the next morning.  Once I settled in I connected to the free Wi-Fi and the rest of the world.

The suite had its own private deck overlooking the mountains and the beautiful Hildesheim garden. The tranquillity was wonderful and, in the distance, I could hear the rhythmic thumping of the ocean waves.

You can either enjoy relaxing sundowners next to the pool or participate in the outdoor activities on hand. Mountain hikes and bird watching can be organised through the guesthouse.

Hildesheim’s central location also means that you are ideally placed to explore everything that the Garden Route has to offer. This is adventure central and activities such as paragliding, mountain biking, dolphin and whale-watching, hang-gliding, horse riding, scenic drives, day tours, ferry cruises, angling and other water sports are just a short drive away.
