“Hlaudi the only one that needs to be regulated” - DA

BY CHARL BOSCH - AUGUST 18, 2015

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has described South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Operating Officer (COO), Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s calling for a regulated media as nonsense, and that the only regulation needed, should be applied on him.

Speaking in a statement, party Shadow Minister for Communications, Gavin Davis, said Motsoeneng’s comments, made during a panel discussion yesterday, again shows why the national broadcaster has “become the laughing stock of the country”.

“If anybody needs to be regulated, it is Hlaudi Motsoeneng himself. Every time Hlaudi opens his mouth, he damages the credibility of our public broadcaster,” Davis said.

“It is cause for concern that Hlaudi Motsoeneng appears to be dictating SABC editorial policy. This is particularly so in the light of the SABC missing the deadline to review its editorial policy by six years.

He also stated that Communications Minister Faith Muthambi had, in reply to a Parliamentary question, attributed the delay in policy to “leadership instability” and that she also failed to present it before the end of the first quarter as promised.

“We call on the SABC Board and the new SABC CEO to expedite the review of the SABC’s Editorial Policy. Perhaps this will put a stop to the nonsense spouted by Hlaudi Motsoeneng,” Davis concluded.
