Hockey results: St Andrew’s College vs Selborne College

MAY 24, 2016

The St Andrew’s College 1st XI had a memorable and historic win over rivals Selborne at Webster on Friday night. The Four Squares enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and tested the Selborne defence on a number of occasions without scoring.

Ross Vides, Jonty Hoard and Peter Jarvis all came close at the far post, but frustratingly could not turn the dominance into goals. Luke Hobson and Josh Marx held the central defence which thwarted the Selborne attack, although these were mostly in the form of overheads.

The second half saw St Andrew’s continue to dominate the midfield which finally led to a goal after some excellent work by Zuko Yaka, Ross Vides and Pater Jarvis.

With 15 minutes to go, Selborne, who had not really threatened the College goal much, began to gain more possession in the midfield as the St Andrew’s College side 'gave away' cheap ball. One such bout of possession led to a scramble in the College D and a 'soft' goal was conceded to level the scores with six minutes to play.

St Andrew’s continued to maintain possession as the both sides threw all they could into trying to win the match. A moment of sporting brilliance with 90 seconds left, from Ross Vides won the match for St Andrew’s College, as he 'stole' the ball off the stick of the Selborne centre back and 'whammied' the ball past a surprised and advancing Selborne keeper.

Final result: 2-1. This sealed two victories over Selborne in 2016.
