Home from home: Memorable weekend stay at 36 on Bonza

BY DARREN JOHN - JULY 9, 2015

The Grey High School versus Dale College annual sporting event was recently held in King Williams Town and with my youngest boy being part of the Grey rugby team, I decided to treat him to a stay at one of East London’s finest establishments - 36 on Bonza, which is located in the city’s upmarket Beacon Bay suburb.

We arrived on a cold Friday evening and were greeted by manager, Michelle Ilsley, who showed us to our exquisitely-appointed luxury suite.

As soon as we entered our suite, my son noticed two large cups filled with instant hot chocolate and marshmallows on the side. With that in hand, and the spectacular view of a Koi pond at the entrance to the building, he was instantly sold.

36 on Bonza comprises of ten elegant en-suite rooms. Each one comes with the option of either a queen size or single bed covered in crisp white percale linen, flat-screen television with selected DSTV channels, air-conditioning, fridge, cutlery and crockery, a tea/coffee making station and free Wi-Fi.

In addition to catering for small informal breakfast or lunch sessions, 36 on Bonza also boasts an in-and-outdoor bar, secluded but spacious lounge area and a sparkling blue pool.

After unpacking, we headed off to a local popular restaurant where we enjoyed a delectable supper before heading back to 36 on Bonza for an early night.

Fully-rested, we woke up early to prepare for the day. We then made our way to the guesthouse breakfast area and tucked in to a selection of cereals, salads, muffins and fruit juice for starters. Not long after, we indulged in their hot breakfast of the day, which was eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, potato roast and toast, all served with lovely percolated coffee.

36 on Bonza has only recently begun offering dinner from Monday to Thursday evenings, these have to be pre-ordered. This is definitely something I will try on my next visit. With breakfast done, we said our goodbyes to Michelle and headed out to the battlefield.

While this was a sporting weekend stopover, I can honestly recommend 36 on Bonza for business and leisure stays as well. Offering professional, friendly service and luxurious surroundings, 36 on Bonza is the perfect base for exploring all East London has to offer!
