Human settlements to consider R2.2 million Wells Estate sale today

OCTOBER 7, 2014

The Human Settlements Committee will consider a proposal to sell a property in Ranger Street, Wells Estate for R2.2 million when it meets today.

The meeting was scheduled to take place on September 19 but was postponed after a Council meeting was called for that day.

The 12 095 square metre property is zoned for industrial purposes, Council’s Valuer pointing out that the growth of the motor industry in the metro is likely to have “a snowball effect” on other manufacturing sectors and that “in turn demand for industrial space will match such growth”.

The Committee will also consider a proposal to rezone a property in Balfour Street, South End from Residential 1 to Business 1, which the directorate has recommended should not be approved.

The directorate points out in a report to the committee that the present rezoning should be retained because of its “prominent location” and because the recent transportation upgrades make it “part of the strategic land parcels that will be critical to the development of the Baakens Valley Precinct”.

Also on the agenda is an application from NMMU to develop a “node” on its 2nd Avenue Campus that will be a “one-stop shop” for students residing and academic staff employed on that cam-pus.

The development will consist of a multi-purpose academic node that will include computer labs and places of instruction; a student lifestyle centre with food and domestic retail; residential accommodation and group residential to be marketed as a “life right” unit. - metrominutes
