I never gave Maimane leadership classes - de Klerk

BY CHARL BOSCH - FEBRUARY 3, 2016

Former President FW de Klerk has again rubbished allegations that he offered so-called leadership classes to Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane.

On Friday, the Mail and Guardian, citing alleged party insiders, claimed that Maimane had been making special visits to de Klerk’s house in Cape Town, seeking advice on speeches and leadership. In a series of tweets shortly after, Maimane described the findings as an “utter lie” and that he only met de Klerk for the first time two years ago.

Speaking at conference on Tuesday to mark the 26th anniversary of his un-banding of apartheid speech in Parliament, de Klerk blasted the report as “absolute nonsense”, saying he had been contacted by a M&G journalist for comment on a story, but never received an email with the questions he was promised.

M&G editor Verashni Pillay has stated that the paper remains by its story and that both de Klerk and Maimane were given opportunities to respond, but chose to remain mum.
