Iconic Volkswagen kombi steps into generation six
An undoubted icon since its original release in 1955, Volkswagen has unveiled the long-awaited replacement for its aging T5 kombi range, in the form of the T6.
While still retaining the same silhouette and proportions as before, the T6 is said to offer improved dynamics and enhanced levels of comfort and safety than before.
Compared to the T5, the T6 features a redesigned front facia consisting of new headlights, grille, front bumper, new tailgate and taillights. LED daytime running lights are also offered on some models as well as the option of 16 or 17-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the interior has gone under the knife with a change in ergonomics, upgraded trim and inclusion of more storage areas than on the T5. Comfort levels have also gone up a notch with some models coming as standard with Volkswagen’s Multi-Collision Braking System and 6.3-inch Composition Media infotainment system, which senses when the screen is about to be touched.
A five-inch static LCD unit is standard fitment on lower spec model with the flagship T6 Caravelle offering the Discover system with optional satellite navigation. In addition, the latter also features the option of a reverse camera and driver fatigue alert.
As with the T5, the T6 will once again be offered in five derivatives powered by the same single turbo and bi-turbo 2.0 TDI engines. Transmission options consist of a five-or speed manual, as well as a seven-speed dual clutch DSG, which can provide drive to either the front or all four wheels.
Starting the T6 range off, the pick-up is once again offered as either a single or double cab solely available with the manual transmission and front-wheel drive. Cargo space is rated at 5.7 and 4.2 square metres respectively.
Transport Panel Van
Available in either short-or long wheelbase forms, the Panel Van is said to feature enough space for three Euro pallets, with Volkswagen claiming cargo volumes ranging from 5.8m? to 6.7 m?. A second sliding door can be have as an option.
Transporter Crew Bus
As its name suggests, the Crew Bus foregoes some of the Panel Van’s cargo space for a rear seats than be folded flat depending on your needs. Like the van, the Crew Bus can be ordered as either a LWB or SWB, but also with front-or four-wheel drive.
Likely to be the most popular T6 derivative, the front-wheel drive only Kombi can accommodate up to eight passengers in LWB form, with the same cargo volumes as the Panel Vans with all the seats removed. Available in two trim levels, each seat can also be tipped forward to aid rear entry, or folded flat to create more space.
Capping off the T6 range, the luxury Caravelle is also offered in a choice of two trim levels, with both featuring seats that could be turned 360 degree without having to be removed. The flagship Highline also adds a number of comfort features including tri-zone climate control, 17-inch Cascavel alloy wheels, dual electric sliding doors and either front or four-wheel drive.
A two year / unlimited km warranty and three year / 60 000m km maintenance plan is standard on the Transporter, with the Kombi and Caravelle boasting a three year / 120 000 km warranty and five year / 60 000 km maintenance.
