IDP 2016 – New Five Year Plan to be put in place

OCTOBER 4, 2016

The George Municipality will next week embark on a process to determine the developmental needs and priorities in the 27 wards of George. The community is encouraged to attend these meetings to ensure that the needs and priorities of their wards and which they regard as important are listed in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) which is now being compiled for the period 2017 – 2022.

The IDP sets out a five year plan for the entire city of George and is reviewed on an annual basis by the Council. The Municipal Systems Act indicates that the IDP must inform the municipality as its principal strategic planning instrument.

“Public Participation is an integral part of local democracy and the involvement of communities and community organisations in the matters of local government is a priority of municipalities”, said Municipal Manager, Mr Trevor Botha.

The IDP is central to a municipality’s ability to deliver on its mandate and the review process is required to be a transparent and inclusive one. The IDP ensures the effective use of scarce resources by helping a municipality to prioritise effectively and informs the budget process. It strengthens democracy and promotes co-ordination between national, provincial and local government.

The timetable for ward based meetings starting on the 11th October 2016 will be advertised in local newspapers, on community radio, on the George municipal website and on the George Municipal Facebook page. Flyers will be distributed and in some wards loud hailing will notify residents of the venue, date and time of meetings to be held in the month of October. George Municipality would like you to participate in your future. Attend these meetings and give your constructive input.
