The Eastern Cape Department of Health has confirmed that 29 initiates died during the province’s winter initiation season, after originally pegging the casualties at 28.

Speaking to News24, department Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the previously unaccounted for death still shows a decrease in the total number fatalities, which stood at 38 last year.

He also stated that a total of 133 initiates continue to remain in hospital, while three nurses, reportedly responsible for the death of an initiate at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha earlier this month, would appear Ngqeleni Magistrate's Court later this month.
