Ithemba Centre bids farewell to the centre manager

Ithemba Special Day Care Centre, based in Port Elizabeth, recently bade farewell to Manager, Maureen Miles, who retired after serving at the centre for 23 years.

Before joining Ithemba, Miles was an educator at a mainstream school, where she ended up teaching special classes.

“She always fought for the children’s rights and to make the communities aware. She fought the stigma and lead parents of children with disabilities to accepting their children as they are,” said the current centre manager, Sabrina Lambers.

According to Lambers, one of Miles’ achievements was leading Ithemba from being a project of Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health (PEMH) into being an independent organisation.

Lambers described Miles as a very passionate and dedicated person.

“She would always go an extra mile for children, parents and staff,” added Lambers.

“We thank her for all the years of love and dedication; we will always miss her but wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement,” she concluded.
