United States civil rights campaigner Reverend Jesse Jackson is to be invited to deliver the annual Govan Mbeki Memorial Lecture when he visits Nelson Mandela Bay next month.

An item on the Sports, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services agenda for its meeting on Thursday, points out that Jackson will be visiting the country for the South African Traditional Music Achievements (SATMA) at Fort Hare on October 3 and 4.

Former President Thabo Mbeki was to have delivered the lecture in June but this had to be cancelled due to the fact that the Red Local Museum was closed.

A budget, not exceeding R150 000, has been requested for costs associated with the lecture by Jackson, although it is pointed out that this will depend on the size of his delegation. - Metrominutes
