“Jordaan a part-time mayor from Luthuli House”- Trolip

BY CHARL BOSCH - MAY 29, 2015

Democratic Alliance (DA) Eastern Cape leader, and National Federal Chairperson, Athol Trollip, has branded yesterday’s appointment of South African Football Association (SAFA) boss Danny Jordaan as Nelson Mandela Bay’s new Executive Mayor a “false start for a sinking ANC”.

“The election of Jordaan may as well have happened in the boardroom of Luthuli House. Jordaan will be nothing more than a part-time Mayor for NMB, as he jets-in and out fulfilling SAFA commitments,” Trolip said in reference to Jordaan refusing to vacate his position as head of the footballing body.

“The very afternoon of his election he will jet off to Zurich to the FIFA congress, leaving the people of NMB behind and leaderless. Who does Jordaan really serve, when he leaves NMB moments after being elected?”

Trolip also stated that Jordaan’s appointment was simply “ploy at a time when new governance was needed” adding that, “The same ANC that destroyed Nelson Mandela Bay is still in government, just with a new face”.

Eyewitness News has meanwhile reported that Jordaan, who is currently under scrutiny following bribery allegations made against an unnamed South African official relating to the county’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has vowed to cut down on municipal expenses and tackle corruption, saying that “We don’t need a plane to go to mother world.”
